From 17th–23rd November, organisations across the UK will unite to mark National Safeguarding Week. This week is about raising awareness of the importance of safeguarding – making sure that children, young people, and adults at risk are safe, supported, and able to live free from harm. Our volunteer Lucianna Brunskill, shares the below information on Vale Domestic Abuse Services’ approach to safeguarding – and why we all have a role to play to keep our communities safer…
Safeguarding is about more than responding when something goes wrong. It means creating safe environments; protecting people from abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and ensuring that support is in place for those who need it most.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility! From professionals and community groups to friends, families, and neighbours.
For people facing domestic abuse, safeguarding can be the difference between solitude and security. Abuse often strips people of their confidence, security, and independence. Safeguarding provides a framework of protection that helps with making sure survivors are listened to, risks are identified early, and the right support is in place.
At Vale DAS, safeguarding is at the heart of what we do. Every day, we work alongside survivors of domestic abuse to:
- Listen and believe service users who share their experiences.
- Create safety plans tailored to individual needs.
- Work with other organisations, charities and the local authority to ensure the right protections and services are in place.
- Empower survivors to make safe and informed choices for their future.
National Safeguarding Week is a reminder that we all have a role to play. By being aware of the signs of abuse, reaching out to those who may be struggling, and knowing where to go for support, we can help keep our communities safer.
If you are worried about your own situation or someone else’s, support is available. Please reach out by calling 01446 744755 or by visiting us at 198 Holton Rd, CF63 4HN (Mon-Fri 9.30am – 4.30pm). Safeguarding is about protecting lives, and together we can make a difference.
