National Volunteer’s Week 2025 – Meet One of Our Incredible Volunteers

June 2nd–8th marks National Volunteer’s Week – a time to celebrate the invaluable contributions of volunteers across the UK.

At Vale Domestic Abuse Services (Vale DAS), we are proud to work alongside compassionate and dedicated individuals who generously give their time, energy, and expertise to help us support survivors of domestic abuse across the Vale of Glamorgan. Our volunteers play a vital role in our mission to empower survivors and promote long-term, meaningful change in our communities.

This week, we’re spotlighting one of our newer volunteers, Lucianna Brunskill, who shares her inspiring perspective on volunteering and the powerful impact it can have – both for individuals and the wider community.

“Volunteering is a two-way street – you give your time, but you gain so much more.”

“From day one, the staff at Vale DAS have been incredibly supportive. Before I started, I completed an induction and training to learn more about the charity, the realities of domestic abuse, and the broader social issues connected to it. It quickly became clear that Vale DAS is about much more than offering immediate help – it’s about empowering individuals and promoting lasting societal change.”

Lucianna explains that what drew her to volunteer was the organisation’s clear and heartfelt mission: providing hope, support, and safety to survivors of abuse, particularly women and children.

“When I thought about how I wanted to spend my time, volunteering with Vale DAS was an easy decision. The sense of purpose and fulfilment it brings is something I think many people are looking for – a way to make a real difference.”

Through training and ongoing conversations with the team, Lucianna has developed a deeper understanding of domestic abuse – how it affects people of all backgrounds and doesn’t always follow a visible pattern.

“That awareness changed the way I see the issue. It’s not about ‘other people’ – it’s about any one of us. I wanted to be part of something that offers empathetic, confidential support and helps survivors rebuild their lives. Everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and heard.”

Creating Safer, Stronger Communities

Lucianna also highlights the broader impact of charities like Vale DAS.

“These services don’t just help individuals – they help break cycles of abuse that can ripple across families, generations, and communities. Through education, outreach, and early intervention, organisations like Vale DAS challenge stigma and raise awareness in powerful ways.”

Why Volunteer? The Personal and Collective Value

Volunteering, Lucianna says, is about more than giving back – it’s a transformative experience.

“It’s one of the most worthwhile things you can do. You gain new perspectives, become more aware of structural inequalities, and connect with people who are passionate about creating change.”

She notes that the impact is often tangible – you see how your time is helping someone in real, visible ways. And the personal rewards are just as significant.

“You build resilience, empathy, and emotional intelligence – qualities that are not only valuable professionally but personally enriching too. Volunteering also improves your mental wellbeing and gives you a stronger sense of purpose.”

As we celebrate National Volunteer’s Week 2025, we want to thank Lucianna – and all our incredible volunteers – for the hope, time, and care they bring to our work every single day.
